Fast-paced, fun-filled, performance poetry contest for the young in years but with wisdom beyond them!
Following wordshops run by seasoned slamsters Sara-Jane Arbury and Marcus Moore in schools across the region, Swindon’s wittiest young wordsters will perform their most slamazing poetry in a bid to reach the hearts and hearing parts of the audience.
This is an event for invention, flair, and commitment, where randomly-chosen judges will award points for poetic style and content and the warmth of audience response.
Which young versifiers will become Swindon’s Poet Idols and have their names on the prestigious Youth Slam Cup?
Schools taking part will be Churchfields, Commonweal, Dorcan Technology College, Greendown, Headlands, Highworth Warneford, Hreod Parkway, Kingsdown, Ridgeway, and St Joseph’s RC.
Wordshops project managed by Josie Williams, Community Arts Development Officer, The Commonweal School. Youth Slam Cup sponsored by Commonweal School – a Performing Arts College.
Welcome to the twelfth Swindon Slam! – an opportunity for poets of any age, experience, or pedigree to take their gaze off the page and do it on stage; to share their verve and verse with a supportive and appreciative audience; to seize their moment to stanza and deliver!
This is what happens. Poets who want to have a go, apply to enter as soon as possible. Number of competitors is limited – number of applaudience is not! On the night, competing poets are called up on stage to perform for three minutes each. From then on, it’s a knockout! Kindly judges, chosen from the kindly audience, decide who inspires and who expires. But whatever their fate, all competitors can expect a rush of adrenalin, roars of applause, and showers of flowers. Everyone is a winner and gets a prize, even if it’s only a choccy haiku. But only one poet becomes the twelfth Swindon Slam! champion and carries off the bubbly-filled trophy.
If you want to compete, ring the referee on 01285 640470 or e-mail Marcus@spiel.wanadoo.co.uk
Hosting proceedings, juggling judgements, crunching numbers, and presiding with wit, wisdom, and whistle, will be that Spiel-slick duo of MCs, master mischief-maker Marcus Moore, and deceptively-deft, Sara-Jane Arbury.
